Going With The Flow

A Watercolor Painting by Mary Ann Boysen

Going with the Flow was done utilizing the advantages of the watercolor canvas, I could create the counterpoint movement in the water by painting in one direction and lifting in the opposite direction. The lily pads are painted with more opaque pigments to bring them to the surface, appearing to float on the more transparent water.

I don't often use opaque color, but I thought that using both opaque and transparent pigments, helped with the depth of this painting. Because of the swirls in the water, there are no exact reflections. The deep part of each wave picks up the dark colors in the scene.
